Homicide probe after Waitaki bodies find

Police are treating at least one of the Waitaki Valley deaths as a manslaughter.

The bodies of a man and a woman found on a remote South Canterbury property late on Sunday morning have now been removed from the scene.

They were found by motorcyclists in the Waitaki Valley, about 75km southwest of Timaru, during a charity ride to raise money for Waimate Main School.

Detective Inspector Greg Williams says the bodies were removed on Monday afternoon.

It's expected investigators will remain at the scene for several days, Fairfax reports.

Det Insp Williams said a team of 25 investigators is working on the case.

The bodies have yet to be identified, but it's expected post-mortem examinations will get under way on Tuesday.

Police want to speak to anyone who has seen or had contact with local man Jason Frandi since he was last seen at his home on Saturday morning.

He was reported missing on Sunday.

Mr Frandi, 43, is caucasian, of solid build, with extensive tattoos on his arms and backs of both hands.

Police are also looking for Mr Frandi's car, a silver 1997 328i series BMW saloon.

Trail bike rider Daryl MacDonald said the body of the man who looked to be in his late 30s or early 40s was still warm when he and fellow riders chanced upon the scene.

The woman's bloodstained body was found some distance away in a clearing between trees, he told Fairfax.

Waimate Main School principal Adam Rivett said the riders told him the woman's throat was slit.

Mr Rivett said the property was extremely remote and normally required a key to enter.

"Forestry workers do go through that area, but that could have been weeks or months down the track," he said.
