Homicide remains unsolved

The Mounties are employing fresh eyes and new technology to bring Misha Pavelick's killer to justice.

Six years ago, Pavelick was killed during a May long weekend party near Regina Beach. Charges have not yet been laid in his death.

The 19-year-old was among 200 young people attending a private party at a campground when he was stabbed the night of May 21, 2006, during a violent confrontation between invited guests and gatecrashers.

Since his death, the RCMP has interviewed hundreds of people in the ongoing homicide investigation.

"When the investigation was first launched, a lot of the statements and interviews were done with audio recorders, with cassettes or VHS tapes, so over the last year, we've converted that file to a digital file," Sgt. Robin Zentner, head of the RCMP's Historical Case Unit, said in a recent interview. "Searching electronically for information will help us bring this case to a conclusion much quicker than if we were still doing it the manual way."

Investigators with no previous connection to the case are combing through documents to determine if follow-ups are required or if there are people who should be re-interviewed.

"We wanted to get a second set of eyes looking through the file," Zentner said.

Everyone at the party has been interviewed - some numerous times - and more interviews are in the offing.

"We have been monitoring a lot of the youths that we know were at that party and some have had involvement with police or other law enforcement agencies for unrelated reasons," Zentner said. "We've been working with those agencies as well."

He emphasized that the homicide is not a cold case. Zentner believes new developments are possible because people's friendships or allegiances can change. He hopes people who might have been fearful about sharing information with police come forward now.

"One of the things that we unfortunately cannot control is the speed in which the information we require to successfully bring the investigation to a conclusion comes into our office," he said. "We are trying to do everything we can to bring closure to Misha's family and we'd like to bring the person or persons responsible to justice."

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call the Historical Case Unit at 780-5582, their local RCMP detachment, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or *8477 from a cellphone. "They might think their information is irrelevant, but sometimes it's the smallest piece of the puzzle that turns out to be the most important," Zentner said.

He urges people to socialize safely during the summer. "We don't want this tragedy to repeat itself", Zentner said, "or have any other families go through what the Pavelicks have gone through."
