Homicide police seek further car sightings

Police say they've had a positive sighting of a car belonging to a journalist beaten to death in Whanganui, about 30 minutes after his body was found.

Derek Round, 77, was found about 8.30am on Thursday at his home in Campbell Street.

Police have been keen to hear about the movements of Mr Round's 1996 blue Jaguar XJ6 and have now confirmed it was seen being driven from the Aramoho area of the city into Whanganui by the river on Somme Parade about 8am on Thursday.

"This is positive news as we now believe the car was being driven by whoever was responsible for Derek's death," Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Kirby said.

"It was likely to have been taken away from Derek's house in Campbell Street on Wednesday evening. We also believe the car may have visited places in the Aramoho area between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning."

He said police were keen to hear of other sightings of the car on Wednesday night or early Thursday, and he was sure other people must have seen it on their way to work on Thursday.

Police have been searching around where the car was seen for clothing they wanted to recover, including a red long-sleeved jersey or sweatshirt, a black leather sleeveless vest, dark coloured stonewashed jeans, dark fingerless gloves and a pair of dark sports shoes with a light colour around the soles and coloured laces.

Det Snr Sgt Kirby said Mr Round, a former editor and foreign correspondent for the New Zealand Press Association, died from a number of violent blows to his head, most likely in his living room.

He said it was a horrifying crime and public help was needed to solve it.

"Not only will you help put a violent offender before the court but you will also bring a resolution for Derek's grieving family."
