Badon pulls bill to let governor to call out National Guard troops for murder rate - nola.com

BATON ROUGE -- A bill that would allow the governor to call out the National Guard to help quell spiraling murder rates in major cities was pulled by its chief sponsor Thursday. Rep. Austin Badon, D-New Orleans, who sponsored House Bill 758, told the House Judiciary Committee said that he did not have the votes to move the bill and asked the panel to shelve it.

Badon said the governor's office made telephone calls to committee members asking them to kill the measure. "They called me and asked me not to go with it," Badon said. "Other (panel) members told me they got phone calls" to oppose it

Badon's bill would have authorized the governor to call out the National Guard when the murder rate of areas with populations of more than 200,000 residents reaches 45 per 100,000 residents.

Badon said that by his count the city's murder rate was about 70. He said that the New Orleans Police Department was stretched thin for the BCS national football championship game and the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans in January when 740 officers were called out for the events.

"We are going out of our way to protect the visitors but what about the people who live there?" Badon asked. "Something has to be done."

The governor's office did not respond to Badon's allegations.
