Closing arguments in NY doc's manslaughter trial
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jurors have begun deliberating in the manslaughter trial of a New York doctor accused of hitting a skateboarder with his car and driving off.
Lawyers delivered closing arguments in Erie County Court in Buffalo on Tuesday and jurors were given the case just after 5 p.m. If they haven't reached a verdict by 9 p.m., they'll be sequestered in a hotel.
Prosecutors say Dr. James Corasanti was drunk, texting and speeding when he hit and killed 18-year-old Alexandria Rice after a country club outing last July.
Defense attorneys counter that the suburban Buffalo doctor had no idea he'd hit a person until he got home and began investigating the damage to his car.
He faces up to 23 years in prison if convicted of vehicular manslaughter and other charges.
