San Diego police investigating baby's death as manslaughter

This post has been corrected. See note below.

Homicide investigators are probing the death of an 11-month-old boy who died a day after being found "unresponsive" at a daycare center, the San Diego Police Department announced late Friday.

The announcement came as the medical examiner's office released its finding that the child, Maurice Oliver, died of head and spine trauma. The cause of death was listed as manslaughter.

On the basis of that finding, the manslaughter unit "has assumed responsibility for the investigation," said Lt. Ernie Herbert. An earlier investigation was done by the child-abuse unit.

Maurice died May 24 at Rady Children's Hospital after being found "unresponsive" at the center in the Clairemont Mesa West neighborhood a day earlier, police said. The child was four days away from his first birthday.

[For the record, 5:47 p.m. Aug. 18: An earlier version of this post implied that the child died at the daycare center. In fact, he was found "unresponsive" at the daycare center, and he died the next day at a hospital.]
