Parents face homicide charges after baby drowns in tub

Houston parents of two young children have been charged with negligent homicide after their 8-month-old baby drowned in a bathtub, court records show.

Toderick Cole died June 17, two days after his parents left him and his 2-year-old brother unattended in a bathtub at their apartment in the 2700 block of Reed Road, officials said.

His father, Roderick Cole, 24, put the boys in the bathtub with the water running and left the room to help his wife take clothes to the car, the couple told investigators.

The couple left the apartment and got into an argument in the parking lot. Gabrielle Cole, 23, left in her car after the argument, she told police.

The two were outside for seven to 10 minutes, they told police.

When Roderick Cole went back into the house, his 8-month-old was lying face down in the water in the bathtub.

He called 911 and began giving the child CPR, the document states.

Paramedics took the child to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died 2 days later from complications.

The medical examiner ruled the child's death a homicide. Roderick Cole has not yet been arrested. Gabrielle Cole has been released on a $ 30,000 bail.

The older child is with relatives, said Child Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olguin. She said the agency still has an open case and the couple are taking parenting classes. Neither has a history with CPS.
