Homicide in Keeseville

KEESEVILLE — A man found dead on River Street in Keeseville was the victim of a homicide, according to State Police.

The man's name, age, hometown and manner of death have not been released.

According to New York State Police Troop B Bureau of Criminal Investigation Capt. Robert LaFountain, police and EMS responded to a location on River Street near the footbridge across the Ausable River at about 6:14 a.m. Sunday.

"Upon arrival, the deceased male was located at the scene," LaFountain said.

"There is evidence that he was the apparent victim of a homicide."

Essex County Coroner Walter Marvin also responded to the scene. The victim's body was removed to Albany Medical Center, where an autopsy is scheduled to be conducted tomorrow.

The crime scene was secured by State Police and the State Police Violent Crimes Team, LaFountain said. Forensic ID Unit and members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation continue to investigate the incident.

Essex County District Attorney Kristy Sprague has also been notified of the investigation.

LaFountain would not say whether police had a suspect in the killing. They made no appeal to the public seeking information.

"As we obtain additional information, we will release the details to the public, but at this time, due to the sensitivity and nature of the investigation, there are limited details that we can provide," LaFountain said. He did not elaborate on what made the case "sensitive."

Concerned Keeseville residents were discussing the case Sunday afternoon. Chatting on Front Street, Tracy and Bill Pray expressed disbelief after hearing news of the apparent homicide in their town.

"We're just kind of shocked," Tracy Pray said.
