Bunbury manslaughter mum on parole

A Bunbury mother jailed for manslaughter for helping her husband and son with the stabbing death of a stranger has been released from prison on parole.

Tanya Louise Smith was jailed for four years in May last year after she was convicted for her part in assisting her son, Kenneth John Smith, who murdered Jarrad Fitzpatrick in a Bunbury driveway.

Her son was jailed for life and will spend 18 years behind bars for Mr Fitzpatrick's murder. Her husband, Colin John Smith, was jailed for six and a half years for manslaughter after he and his wife were convicted for helping their son.

Mr Fitzpatrick, 23, was stabbed in the driveway of the home of Kenneth Smith's former girlfriend early on November 28, 2009.

Tanya Louise Smith, whose sentence was backdated to August 2010, was granted parole after the Prisoners Review Board deemed her release would not present an unacceptable risk to community safety.

In making its decision, the board took into account that Smith had participated in programs to gain insight into her offending behaviour and her release would build on the "gains made in the program", she had a limited criminal history and no prior violent offending, the deterrent effect of her first jail term, the first opportunity for parole and family support.

The Department of Corrective Services confirmed today Smith had been released from custody on parole last week.

As part of her parole conditions, Smith is banned from any contact with Mr Fitzpatrick's family.
