Man guilty of Auckland city manslaughter

A jury has found a man who killed a Sky TV employee with one punch in downtown Auckland guilty of his manslaughter.

Kit John Murray was found guilty of the manslaughter of Billy Dawson, 34, who died on October 7 last year after a fight near the Spy Bar in downtown Auckland about 1.30am.

The jury at the High Court in Auckland returned the verdict after deliberating for about two and a half hours, Fairfax reports.

Crown lawyers argued that Murray was breaking up a scuffle Dawson was having with Mona Christo Feterika and Antoni Te Moko Rogers.

He led an abusive Dawson away but punched him without warning in the face, causing him to fall on to concrete and knocking him unconscious, the Crown said.

Murray had argued he was putting up his forearm to fend off Dawson in self-defence.

Murray was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on October 9. Feterika and Rogers are still facing assault charges.
