Homicide team takes over investigation of North Vancouver body

NORTH VANCOUVER -- Metro Vancouver's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over a case involving the discovery of a badly-decomposed body in North Vancouver over the weekend.

Sgt. Jennifer Pound of IHIT said the RCMP have not yet been able to determine the age or sex of the victim but believe the person died as a result of foul play. The body was found in the 2000 block of Curling Road.

"There are many unanswered questions in these early stages and much of the details of the findings can't be released at this time as we are pursuing this as a homicide investigation, " Pound said.

The body was discovered by a local resident on Saturday evening. Due to failing light North Vancouver RCMP cordoned off the area and came back on Sunday with Metro's Integrated Forensic Identification Section, the B.C. Coroners Service and an entomologist familiar in using larval insect development to pinpoint approximate time of death.

Residents in the area had reported a foul smell for a few days before the remains, in an advanced state of decomposition, were found near near Curling Road and Belle Isle Place.

Pound said further testing will be required to determine the cause of death but at this time it does appear to be suspicious in nature and that IHIT had taken over.

Pound said police will be on the scene for several more days and are canvassing the neighbourhood for witnesses. She said a foot trail from Belle Isle Place to Curling Road will also remain closed.

In the meantime, she said IHIT wants to talk to anyone who may know details about the case.
