MIDDLETOWN - An autopsy is scheduled Monday for an unidentified woman who was found Saturday in a wooded area near the Westfield Falls waterfalls, officials said.

The woman, who is believed to be between 18 and 30 years old, was found in the area of Miner Street, east of Interstate 91. Police confirmed that they were investigating a murder.

A spokeswoman for the chief medical examiner's office in Farmington said Saturday night that the woman remained unidentified and that the autopsy would be performed Monday morning.

Two hikers found the body after following a trail of blood, and police were called to the area shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday. The woman had a tatoo on her rear shoulder, according to media reports.

Miner Street was closed to all traffic between Sachem Drive, on the south, to the area near the Miner Hills Family Golf Course, on the north. The nine-hole course, opened in 1994, is the only golf course in Middletown.

The body was found in an area not far from the state police headquarters on Country Club Road in Middletown.

The state police major crimes squad assisted at the scene, and the Middletown police are in charge of the investigation.
