Homicide trial ordered for Penn Hills man in May killing

A Penn Hills man was ordered today to stand trial on charges of manslaughter and robbery as well as a firearms violation after a preliminary hearing.

After nearly a month on the lam, Frank Booker, 21, faces trial in connection with the May 11 shooting death of Calvonne Rollins, 20, also of Penn Hills.

According to testimony from his girlfriend, Tamira Scheuermann, Mr. Rollins was driving a Cadillac Escalade with three passengers -- including Ms. Scheuermann and her 1-year-old son -- when he stopped on Crab Hollow Road to pick up Mr. Booker.

Mr. Booker wanted Mr. Rollins to drive him to his home on Blackadore Avenue, she said, adding that Mr. Booker was silent during the ride.

Ms. Scheuermann said she had first seen Mr. Booker earlier that day at a gas station where she and Mr. Booker regularly stopped to buy cigarettes and sometimes drugs.

When Mr. Rollins stopped to let Mr. Booker out, Mr. Booker pulled out a silver revolver and pointed it at Mr. Rollins's head, Ms. Scheuermann said.

Mr. Rollins struggled with Mr. Booker, trying to smack the gun out of his hand and push him out of the car, she said.

Mr. Booker fired at least one shot in the car and four or five more as he fled, she said.

After he was shot, Mr. Rollins put the car in reverse and attempted to drive his girlfriend and her son to safety, Ms. Scheuermann said.

According to court records, Mr. Booker is being held without bond in the Allegheny County Jail.

Flint's battlefield: A three-year murder map

FLINT, MI -- There have been 189 murders in the city since 2010. Below is a map of the locations of each murder in the last three years, as well as the names of the slain on Flint's battlefield. The spike in murders occurred almost immediately after large-scale layoffs in March of 2010. By year's end the city had set a record with 66 murders, breaking the previous mark of 61 set in 1986. Killing continued in 2011 with 57 murders. A look at the map shows the majority of the murders took place on the north and east sides, historically the most economically depressed areas of the city.
