Irish police investigating the murder of a man who was attacked in Dublin city centre have made two arrests.

Eugene Moloney, a former Irish News journalist, died after he was attacked at Camden Street in the early hours of Sunday.

The 55 year old had moved to the city more than 20 years ago and had recently been working as a freelance journalist.

Two men aged in their 20s have been arrested in the south Dublin area in connection with his murder.

They were detained on Monday morning and have been taken to Kevin Street and Pearse Street garda stations for questioning.

Garda have also confirmed that the investigation team has received the results of a post mortem examination which was carried out on the body of Mr Moloney.

The journalist began his career at the Irish News in the 1970s. He was a news reporter and talented features writer with a passion for music.

He later moved to Dublin where he worked for the Irish Independent for more than 20 years before taking redundancy and becoming a freelance journalist.
