Homicide Suspect Dies of Gunshot Wound

A man thought to be a homicide suspect was fatally shot Tuesday night during a confrontation with sheriff's deputies in the South Valley.

It was unclear Tuesday whether the man was killed by deputies or whether he shot himself.

Detectives working in the South Valley first noticed the man at about 7 p.m., and believed he might be a suspect in a homicide, said Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department Lt. Justin Dunlap. The man, who had not been identified as of Tuesday night, got into a light blue van, which sped away when deputies attempted to pull it over.

Dunlap said the man, who was a passenger in the van, fired several rounds at deputies while the van was fleeing. After a chase that lasted seven minutes, deputies forced the van to stop on Atrisco SW, north of Bridge Boulevard. The man then fired more gunshots from the van, and two deputies returned fire, Dunlap said.

The man died at the scene from a gunshot wound, but Dunlap said it was still unclear whether he shot himself or was killed by the deputies.

Dunlap would not say what homicide the man is suspected of committing until deputies confirm his identity. He said deputies planned to investigate through the night and release more information today.

This is the sheriff's department's second officer-involved shooting of the year.

In March, they were involved in the non-fatal shooting of Nathaniel Shipman, who had stolen a school bus and led police across several jurisdictions in a bizarre chase on Interstate 40.
