HARTFORD, Conn.—A Waterbury man has pleaded guilty to first-degree homicide for fatally stabbing a man at an Enfield motel last year.
Thirty-four-year-old Jeffrey Ward had been charged with murder in the September 2011 killing of 29-year-old Hector Sibaja. Under a plea deal, he will be sentenced July 25 to 25 years in prison. Ward also pleaded guilty Monday in Superior Court to first-degree assault and probation violation.
The Hartford Courant reports (http://cour.at/Lmqn8O) that prosecutor Thomas Garcia said it would have been difficult to prove Ward intentionally killed Sibaja.
Police said Ward argued on the phone with a former girlfriend who was at the motel with several others. Ward said the woman told him she was going to have five men jump him when he arrived and he struck at Sibaja in fear. Another woman was injured.

For nearly six years, they were locked up facing a possible death sentence for a grisly 2001 triple homicide in Ypsilanti Township. On Friday, a federal judge dismissed the charges against Deondre Byrd and three other men after a federal prosecutor said new evidence came to light last Friday that prevented the government from taking the case to trial. FLINT, MI -- There have been 189 murders in the city since 2010. Below is a map of the locations of each murder in the last three years, as well as the names of the slain on Flint's battlefield. The spike in murders occurred almost immediately after large-scale layoffs in March of 2010. By year's end the city had set a record with 66 murders, breaking the previous mark of 61 set in 1986. Rasheeda Pegues was found slain on the 2000 block of Ferry Avenue shortly after 11 p.m., the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said. She had died from multiple gunshot wounds. No arrests have been made in the killing. The murder is Camden's 67th this year, far surpassing the city's previous record of 58, set in 1995. Pegues' death was the second killing in Camden over the weekend. On Saturday night, 36-year-old Rahkeem Byrd was shot inside a house on the 1100 block of Thurman Street and died at a hospital.
