Homicide suspects released from jail

Three men accused in separate homicide cases were freed from the Lane County Jail today in the final wave of releases driven by the county's shrinking budget.

All three men will be fitted with ankle bracelets that allow corrections officials to monitor their location electronically. Two of the men were drivers in fatal traffic crashes and the third is a suspect in a death at a campsite.

The three men are Jason Allen Manske, 31; Aaron Earl Curry, 33; and Jeremy Christopher Henry, 33.

Manske is charged with criminally negligent homicide and hit and run in the June 6 death of a pedestrian on East 30th Avenue near Lane Community College. Curry is charged with first-degree manslaughter in the May 1 death of a fellow camper at a site near Hills Creek Lake.

Henry is charged with drunken driving, reckless driving and first-degree manslaughter in the April 8 death of a woman in a head-on collision on Highway 99 near Saginaw. All three are awaiting trial.

The county has to reduce the size of the jail to deal with a $ 100 million cut in its overall budget due falling local, state and federal revenue and rising costs. That has forced a $ 10 million reduction in the sheriff's office budget, which means the elimination of 96 beds at the county jail.

The jail has been releasing inmates over the past three days. Manske, Curry and Henry were among 33 inmates freed today.
