Manslaughter suspect caught in Corcoran

CORCORAN — A man wanted for manslaughter in his father's death landed in custody Monday when officers found him hiding in the back seat of a car driven by two women, officials said.

Authorities had been looking for George Guzman Jr., 36, since he fled his father's home on Thursday night. Corcoran police said Guzman struck his father in the face during an argument, which may have caused the 60-year-old's death.

Investigators got an anonymous tip on Monday that Guzman may be hiding in the 500 block of Benruf Avenue. They went to the residence around 8:30 a.m., but found no signs that anyone was home, Deputy Chief Gary Cramer said.

As the officers left, a detective decided to stay behind and conduct surveillance on the home. Ten minutes later, a car drove out of the garage. The detective stopped the car and found two women in the front seat and Guzman crouching in the back, Cramer said.

Guzman surrendered without incident. The women — identified as Francis Delvalle, 65, and Rachel Delvalle Alderete, 34 — were brought in for questioning and later released. Cramer said they will request that charges be filed against them for accessory after the fact.

Guzman is accused of manslaughter in the death of his father, Jorge Guzman. Officers were called out to his father's house around 10:30 p.m. after neighbors reported hearing a disturbance.

Police met with Jorge Guzman, but he started having trouble breathing during questioning. He lost consciousness and was taken to Corcoran District Hospital, where he later died from "medical complications brought on by the altercation," according to Corcoran police.

At the time of the incident, Guzman was finishing out a parole term for possession of a controlled substance. He was booked into the county jail on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter and a parole violation. His bail was set at $ 70,000.
