Memphis Teen Arrested for Murder of Irish Exchange Student in Tokyo

Japanese police have arrested a Memphis teenager in connection with the manslaughter of an Irish exchange student in Tokyo last month.

Richard Hinds, 19, has been arrested on suspicion of killing 21-year-old Nicola Furlong in her hotel room in the Shinjuku area on May 24.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department told ABC News that Hinds has admitted to strangling Furlong, but told investigators he had no intention to kill.

Hinds and 23-year-old American James Blackston had already been in custody on suspicion of molesting Furlong's female friend, also an Irish national, inside a taxi the night of the manslaughter.

Furlong was found strangled to death at the Keio Plaza Hotel, following a night out with friends, attending a concert by rapper Nicki Minaj. Police say a hotel employee went to check on Furlong's room, after hearing a loud noise, and found her lying on the floor, with Hinds standing nearby.

Police say they decided to additionally charge Hinds with the killing after reviewing Furlong's autopsy and examining surveillance footage from inside the hotel, though investigators would not elaborate on details.

Furlong was studying in the city of Takasaki, about 60 miles northwest of Tokyo.

Hinds is a well known Christian musician in the Memphis area, but had travelled abroad to work as a backup dancer to a Japanese R&B artist, according to WPTY-TV in Memphis. He planned to return home on June 20 before he was arrested.

Flint's battlefield: A three-year murder map

FLINT, MI -- There have been 189 murders in the city since 2010. Below is a map of the locations of each murder in the last three years, as well as the names of the slain on Flint's battlefield. The spike in murders occurred almost immediately after large-scale layoffs in March of 2010. By year's end the city had set a record with 66 murders, breaking the previous mark of 61 set in 1986. Killing continued in 2011 with 57 murders. A look at the map shows the majority of the murders took place on the north and east sides, historically the most economically depressed areas of the city. Just 25 murders in the last three years occurred south of Court Street. The map is color-coded by year. A manslaughter charge against a Marathon man accused of helping cause the death of a teenager by letting her drive drunk has been dropped due to what prosecutors say is lack of evidence. Michael Mearns, 26, the son of former Marathon Mayor Randy Mearns and grandson of former Marathon Councilwoman Margie Mearns, had been charged with manslaughter by culpable negligence following a Feb. 25, 2011, crash in which 17-year-old Amber Kogelis of Lower Matecumbe Key died. "You have to prove he knew she was drinking," State Attorney Catherine Vogel said Wednesday. "It's clear we do not have evidence of the impairment."
