SAN DIEGO -- Homicide detectives were called in to investigate the death of a 4-year-old boy in a Carmel Valley neighborhood, San Diego police said Saturday.

The 36-year-old mother of the boy flagged down a patrol sergeant who was driving out of the Northwestern Division substation about 9:55 a.m. Saturday, according to San Diego police Lt. Ernie Herbert. She asked for help and directed the sergeant to her parked car where the child was not breathing, Herbert said.The sergeant began CPR and called for help, but medics could not save the child's life, Herbert said.Investigators discovered the woman had brought her son from an apartment in the Torrey Hills area of Carmel Valley, where she had been caring for the boy while his father was at work, Herbert said.10News learned the apartment was located in the Torrey Ridge Apartment complex in the 4600 block of Torrey Circle. Detectives were interviewing the boy's mother, family members and neighbors, and were processing the car and apartment for evidence, Herbert said.The boy has been identified but his name was not released pending full family notification, Herbert said.
