Police probe 'apparent homicide' in New Bedford

Police in New Bedford are investigating an apparent homicide in the city, authorities said.

Melvin Pina, 33, of New Bedford was found dead in a Bates Street backyard after residents on the street called 911 shortly before 7:30 a.m. yesterday, according to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.

The district attorney's office released few details but referred to the death as an "apparent homicide." The case is being investigated by New Bedford police and state troopers assigned to District Attorney Samuel Sutter's office.

Anyone with information about Pina's whereabouts Friday night and yesterday is asked to call New Bedford Police at 508-991-6300.
