Erie police, coroner investigate possible homicide in apartment building
Erie police are investigating a potential homicide after a 37-year-old man was discovered dead in his Highpoint Towers apartment Sunday evening.
The unidentified man was discovered dead at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Erie County Deputy Coroner Korac Timon said the man was discovered by family members. Timon said the family came to check on the man because he had not returned phone calls.
The ground-level apartment was locked when the family arrived, Timon said. And the man was discovered dead after a maintenance worker at the apartment building helped them get in.
Timon said the man was dead for about 24 hours before he was discovered.
Erie police detectives, Timon and members the Erie County District Attorney's office were all at the apartment building, at 2314 Sassafras St., on Sunday evening.
Police said the death was reported by a supervisor at the apartment building. Erie police Lt. Tom Eberlein said it was the supervisor who first suggested the death appeared suspicious.
But Erie police, Timon and Erie County District Attorney Jack Daneri all declined to discuss a cause of death or what might make it appear suspicious.
"Because of the nature of the death, I can't comment on any injuries," Timon said.
Eberlein said the man's death is being investigated as a homicide, but Timon said the coroner's office has not made a decision on whether to rule it a homicide.
Timon said a cause of death could be released after an autopsy, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. today.
If the man's death is ruled a homicide, it would be the second at the apartment building in the past year. Nikkia Sawyer, 27, was fatally stabbed in the chest in her fourth-floor apartment in the same building on June 21.
James Lamont "Jimmie" Duncan, 31, is in the Erie County Prison without bond on charges of criminal homicide/murder, aggravated assault, possessing instruments of crime, recklessly endangering another person and abuse of a corpse in connection with that slaying.
