Erie murder suspect charged with assaulting woman, attempting to steal car
Police said they have found no evidence so far to support Erie murder suspect David A. Fry's claims of killing other people.
Fry, 33, remains in the Erie County Prison without bond on charges of bludgeoning 36-year-old Matthew Lyons to death at Lyons' apartment at Highpoint Towers, 2314 Sassafras St., on Saturday.
He is also charged with attempting to rob an east Erie gas station, attempting to steal a woman's car at a west Erie grocery store and robbing three stores in suburban Pittsburgh.
At the time of Fry's arrest shortly after police said he robbed a convenience store in Edgewood, east of Pittsburgh, on Monday night, police said Fry stated that he had killed eight or nine people. He also stated "that last guy I beat his brains in" and "I killed that (expletive)," apparently referring to Lyons.
When asked by reporters on Wednesday night if he had killed others, Fry said yes.
Edgewood Police Chief Robert Payne said today that his department reported Fry's claims to Allegheny County Homicide, and that a county murder detective spoke to Fry when he was taken to UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh late Monday night for treatment of injuries he suffered in his apprehension. Payne said he has not heard of any other murders that might be linked to Fry.
Erie police Lt. Ken Merchant said today that police don't believe Fry's claims of killing other people are credible.
Fry was arraigned before Erie 6th Ward District Judge Dominick DiPaolo on Wednesday night on charges in the assault of a 70-year-old woman outside a westside grocery store on Friday.
Police accuse Fry of pushing the woman into her 2011 black Chrysler 2000, and elbowing her numerous times in the head, face and body in an attempt to steal the car outside of the Tops Friendly Markets, 1520 W. 26th St., according to the criminal complaint. The woman was attacked shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Friday, police said.
Police said the person who attacked the woman ran off after the woman dropped her keys and the car's alarm sounded. The woman, whom police did not name, was treated at Saint Vincent Health Center for her injuries.
Fry was arraigned earlier Wednesday on criminal murder and other charges in Lyons' death. He also was charged with attempting to rob the Shell station at East Sixth and Parade streets on the early morning of March 21, hours after police said he failed to return to a prison pre-release center in the city.
