WILKES-BARRE - The U.S. Marshals Service arrested a man on Monday who is a homicide suspect in Newark, N.J.

Clifton Sykes, 44, was captured in an apartment at 185 S. Hancock St. in Wilkes-Barre by deputy U.S. Marshals and members of the USMS Middle District of Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force.

Sykes was allegedly involved in an altercation in Newark on Friday in which Shannell Anderson was killed by numerous stab wounds to the back with a knife. An arrest warrant was obtained on Saturday charging Sykes with homicide and related offenses.

The U.S. Marshals Service's New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force assisted in the investigation, developing information that Sykes may have fled to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. Investigative leads were forwarded to USMS personnel based in Scranton.

Sykes was located and turned over to the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department for processing on Monday afternoon. He was taken into custody without incident, U.S. Marshal Martin J. Pane stated in a press release.

Sykes is being charged as a fugitive from justice. He was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Donald Whittaker on Monday night and is being held in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility until preparations can be made to extradite him to Essex County, N.J.

"Murder suspects and those charged with violent crimes are of the highest priority in locating and arresting," Pane stated. "The Marshals Service and its fugitive task forces are committed to making our communities safer by ridding our streets of such fugitives."
