Dwight Stallings at 11 months old

SACRAMENTO, CA - The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau is now leading an investigation into the whereabouts of a toddler who hasn't been seen since April 2011, according to Det. Robert Tracy.

Tracy said the case is still a missing child investigation and not a death investigation.

The homicide bureau is handling the investigation because it  has more resources and is better equipped to deal with the circumstances, Tracy said.

On Friday morning, volunteers posted signs at an apartment complex on Florin Road, where the toddler lived with his mother.

"When I see that I was just shocked, I was beyond shocked because I've never seen that baby," said Latoya Palmer, who lives at the complex.

Palmer took a class with Edwards about two years ago at Strategies for Change, a chemical dependency center, but didn't know much about her.

Elk Grove police arrested Edwards last week on unrelated charges. That's when they learned Dwight was unaccounted for so they filed a missing persons report..

Detectives said Edwards provided several accounts of places where her child might be, including Oakland, Reno and Wichita, Kan.

"I have specific information regarding potential paternal relatives in the Wichita, Kan. area and have personally spoken with Wichita, Kan. police department this morning and have asked for their assistance and they are providing that," Tracy said.

Tracy said the case poses "unique challenges" because the child did not have any records or information that is often gathered during investigations- no cell phone usage, bank statements or vehicle.

"It is our job to try to exhaust every lead possible in trying to find this child and I truly, truly hope that this child is found alive," Tracy said.
