Homicide suspect claims others dead

An Erie man who police say was bludgeoned to death by a Westmoreland County convict will be buried on Friday alongside his mother.

Matthew Lyons, 36, was found dead of head trauma in his apartment on Sunday. Erie detectives were traveling to Pittsburgh on Wednesday to pick up David Fry, 33, of Hempfield for his arraignment on homicide and other charges.

On Tuesday, Frances Lyons died of complications from heart disease at her home in Madison, Ohio, according to the Lake County, Ohio, coroner's office. She was 77.

Frances and Matthew Lyons will have a joint funeral at the Monreal Funeral Home in Eastlake, Ohio, on Friday.

Lyons family members declined comment. As they prepare to memorialize their loved ones, police are investigating Fry's claims that he killed "eight to nine" other people.

Edgewood police arrested Fry on Monday on unrelated robbery charges, and officers realized he fit the description of the man wanted for the Erie homicide. Fry, unsolicited, claimed responsibility for other killings after the arrest, said Edgewood Chief Robert Payne.

"That last guy, I beat his brains in," Fry said, according to the police report. "And I killed that (expletive)."

Payne said police in Edgewood, Erie and Allegheny County are investigating Fry's claims, and no one has found any evidence to support them.

"Nobody is missing. There have been no recent murders that have been of interest as far as he is concerned," he said.

Payne said he's disinclined to believe Fry because of the limited timeframe -- six days -- he would have had to commit such acts.

Fry was serving an eight- to 16-year sentence for his conviction in a robbery in Westmoreland County when he absconded from the Erie Community Corrections Center on March 20.

Police accuse him of bludgeoning Matthew Lyons to death with a statue in his apartment in Highpoint Towers. Matthew Lyons' obituary lists his date of death as Saturday.

Erie police, who didn't return calls yesterday, said this week they were trying to determine whether Lyons and Fry knew each other.

According to police, Fry robbed the Sheetz on William Penn Highway in Wilkins on Sunday and the S&R Market in Hazelwood on Monday.

Edgewood police apprehended Fry on Monday when they used a police dog to catch him as they responded to a reported robbery at the Edgewood Express.
