Police investigating double homicide

Police investigating double homicide

Greenville police are investigating a double homicide after responding Friday afternoon to a report of shots fired at an Academy Drive address, officials said.

The initial call was received at 2:17 p.m., and police reported to 314 Academy Drive, where they found two people dead, Capt. Robert A. Williams said.

"We found two victims — one female and one male — who were deceased obviously not from natural causes," Williams said.

Williams would not confirm the manner of death but did say the original report was of shots fired at the address.

"It is being investigated as homicide," he said.

Officials on Friday would not release the victims' names or the nature of their relationship.

Williams said he also could not comment on or provide any suspect information.

"There's nothing to indicate this is anything more than an isolated incident," he said.

Police set up their Mobile Command Unit and remained on the scene Friday evening. A K-9 unit also was at the address on Friday.

Officials walked around the neighborhood doing a door-to-door canvas with neighbors to gather more information about the incident.

Dustin Spirgen, who lives a few houses away from the residence where the bodies were found, said he has lived in the neighborhood for about a year.

"It's a very quiet, safe neighborhood," he said. "Since we've been here, we've never had anything like this happen. It's quite a tragedy."

Spirgen said this type of incident is not uncommon in Fayetteville, where he and his family lived previously, but said this is the closest he has been to an event of this nature.

"It's very heartbreaking when lives are lost," he said. "It's so disconcerting when it happens so close to home.

"It doesn't change my view of the city or the safety of the city, though," he said. "Isolated events are isolated."

Spirgen said he was wearing headphones at the time of the incident and did not hear any gunshots or see any suspicious activity in the neighborhood.

He said he was unaware of the incident until someone called to alert him. Spirgen said he looked outside and saw several Greenville Police Department and Pitt County Sheriff's Office vehicles.

Williams said officials with Pitt County Medical Examiner's Office and the District Attorney's office also were on scene.

District Attorney Clark Everett and Assistant District Attorney Kimberly Robb declined to comment on the incident or their visit to the scene Friday.

Williams said it is not uncommon for members of the District Attorney's office to respond to the scene of a homicide to be involved in an investigation from the beginning.

"It's not unusual for them to be out with us," he said. "It's a very serious crime, and we want to make sure all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed."

The investigation is ongoing, Williams said.

Anyone with information about the incident can call the Greenville Police Department at 329-4300 or Pitt-Greenville CrimeStoppers at 758-7777 or text "PITTGV" and information to 274637.
