Another man, John Coaston, 21, has also been charged with manslaughter in the case. Detectives wrote in a criminal complaint that a witness watched as Mr. Coaston and another man -- now identified as Mr. Williams -- ran up behind Justin Fowler while he walked toward some steps in the Bedford Dwellings housing complex on Oct. 1, 2008. Both men fired shots at Mr. Fowler, the witness said. Mr. Fowler, 22, died at his White Hill Drive home on Dec. 28, 2011. Ohio teen found guilty of aggravated murder in Craigslist scheme

Image
AKRON, Ohio - A teenager was found guilty of aggravated murder Tuesday for his role in a deadly plot to lure men desperate for work with phoney Craigslist job offers. Prosecutors in the weeks-long trial painted 17-year-old Brogan Rafferty of Ohio as a quick student of violence and willing participant in three killings, while the defence argued he was acting under the duress of his alleged accomplice, a self-styled chaplain depicted as a mentor. Authorities say Rafferty , of Stow, helped Richard Beasley , of Akron, lure four victims at separate times with bogus Craigslist job offers to a nonexistent cattle farm in rural Noble County in southeast Ohio; they say the motive was robbery. Authorities say Beasley shot and killed three of the men; the fourth victim was shot in the arm and survived. Rafferty stood with his hands clasped behind his back and showed no emotion as the verdicts were read. His mother leaned over and cried softly. Led from the courtroom, Rafferty shook

Ayotte and Camelon, who had previously known of each other while doing time in a Brockville, Ont., jail, had come face to face on Nov. 7, 2008 outside the Mississippi Ale House in Carleton Place, Ont., which is now called Shenanigans Restaurant & Bar. Camelon, a resident of Franktown, Ont., who had earlier suffered a severe head injury in a car crash, said Ayotte threatened to knock him out and "to be knocked out is death," he told CBC News. Video from the bar, which was shared with the CBC's Evan Dyer, showed Ayotte pointing at Camelon from about seven or eight feet away before Camelon lunged and tackled him.

Augusta manslaughter convictions upheld

Image
Two Richmond County manslaughter convictions have been upheld by the Georgia Supreme Court. Paul Franklin Blevins was tried and convicted in February 2009 for the death of 62-year-old Danny Jones. Jones was found dead April 5, 2007 by firefighters responding to a fire in Jones' home. A blood-stained plank of wood was found near his body and the coroner later determined Jones died from blunt force trauma. Blevins was pulled over later that day by a patrol deputy and arrested on suspicion of DUI. He was carrying several of Jones' possessions and his shirt was soiled with Jones' blood. Justices determined on appeal that "the evidence was sufficient to exclude every reasonable hypothesis other than Blevins' guilt" and convict him of malice manslaughter, armed robbery and arson in the first degree. Also Monday, justices affirmed the conviction of Haskell Johnson, but vacated one of his two life sentences. Johnson was indicted with two other defendants for

Chicago to top last year's homicide tally

Image
CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- The Windy City marked its 435th homicide of the year over the weekend, matching last year's total with more than two months left to go in 2012, the Associated Press reports. A shooting victim was found dead in his South Side residence on Sunday, bringing the weekend total to six. The carnage has been drawing wide media attention and an increased police presence that has helped slow down the rate of growth since a 60% year-over-year jump in the spring. While this year's tally is virtually certain to top 2011, it is unlikely to approach the record of 970 homicides set in 1974. Read More @ Source Criminal Stories Here

435th Homicide Equals Total For All Of Last Year

Image
File Photo Of Ambulance (AP Photo) CHICAGO (CBS) — A man was shot and killed inside a home late Sunday on the South Side, marking the city's 435th homicide of the year — equaling the total last year. Bariffe Fitz, 68, was found shot in the chest about 11 p.m. inside a residence in the 9400 block of South La Salle Street. "It's a disappointing milestone," Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said on the CBS 2 Morning News. "You can't manage this and you can't talk about murder in a positive fashion." While murders in Chicago will easily exceed last year's total, the murder rate has been declining since April 1, when police began to initiate new gang-fighting strategies, McCarthy said. The numbers are high because of a big spike in violence in the first three months of the year, McCarthy said. One of those gang-fighting components includes denying individual recognizance bonds to gang members. So far, 5,500 I bonds have been denied to keep
