Homicide victim was loving, loved

Image
Michelle Mockbee, the Fort Mitchell woman found dead at her Boone County workplace Tuesday, lived for her daughters. "She was very loved," her husband Dan Mockbee said through tears. "She gave so much of herself to everyone else. She did everything she could to make our daughters feel special and loved." Reached at his mother-in-law's home, Dan Mockbee said the girls, 7 and 10, were OK and trying to cope with their mother's death. Asked how she was coping, Michelle Mockbee's mother Patricia Whalen could only say: "It's rough." The family is trying to stick together to support each other, Dan Mockbee said. Michelle Mockbee worked at ThermoFisher for 16 years as a logistics support representative. Dan also works at the company but has taken a leave of absence after his wife's death. Mockbee, 42, was found assaulted inside ThermoFischer Scientific on Empire Drive in the Northern Kentucky Industrial Park about 7:20 a.m. as e

Montreal police said they believe the suspect, Luka Rocco Magnotta , has fled Canada as they continued to scour his blood-soaked apartment in the city. Police have said a janitor found a headless, limbless torso stuffed into a suitcase in an alley behind the building. Interpol issued its warrant for Magnotta , 29, a native of the Toronto area who had been living in Montreal . Local police would not confirm a report in

In rare move, woman's heroin overdose in city ruled homicide

Image
The state medical examiner's office has taken the rare step of classifying a 24-year-old woman's recent drug overdose death as a homicide, one of several recent killings being investigated by Baltimore detectives. Though there are hundreds of drug overdoses each year in Baltimore, investigators typically have little insight into the circumstances surrounding such cases. As such, the medical examiner's office declines to assign a manner of death, leading the state to have a high rate of deaths deemed "undetermined." "If someone injects a toxic substance into somebody and kills them, everybody would call that a homicide," said David Fowler, the state's chief medical examiner. "Because of the nature of these cases, we don't often get that kind of information." A recent case, however, had enough supporting evidence for the medical examiner's office to rule that it was a homicide, something that hasn't happened in several years.

Firefighters cleared of homicide over death of colleagues in 2007 warehouse blaze

Image
The Crown had alleged that Mr Ashley breached his duty of care to those who were killed by "exposing them to substantial risk to life when no other lives were at risk". Mr Woodward was alleged to have breached his duty of care to the four by failing to end the deployment of colleagues wearing breathing apparatus for the purpose of "offensive" firefighting. Warwickshire's Chief Fire Officer reacted to the not guilty verdicts by condemning the decision to press criminal charges against three members of his brigade. Graeme Smith is now calling for the Home Office and Ministry of Justice to investigate how and why the prosecution was allowed to proceed. The fire chief, who was present in court during much of the six-week trial, said: "It is crystal clear that these cases should never have been brought to court in the first place. "But today neither I nor any of my colleagues in the Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service feel any sense of relief

Bertie Acheson, 72, was assaulted after he confronted an intruder in his Glenmore Gardens home on 30 April. He suffered a heart attack during the burglary which detectives said was brought on by stress. The detective leading the murder investigation said they hoped the Crimewatch reconstruction would help them make an "important breakthrough". Detective Chief Inspector Ian Harrison said: "Someone knows who was responsible for taking Bertie's life, leaving his elderly wife, Sheila, completely distraught and leaving the wider family circle absolutely devastated for nothing more than a few hundred pounds from Sheila's purse. "I would remind everyone there is a £10,000 reward on offer from the independent

Homicide Victim's Family Blasts Violence In City

Rochester, N.Y.-- It's a scene that's too common in Rochester. A family mourning the loss of a loved one at the site of their murder. Wednesday night, the Vinson family held a vigil on Saxton Street. On Tuesday, 25-year-old Robert Vinson was shot and killed. His brother, 23-year-old Devon Vinson was also shot. He is in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital. According to police, the two men were followed, assaulted and shot. Police believe the men may have been involved in an altercation at Smith Street where there was a large dice game. The Vinson family is adamant that this is not the case. They say Robert and Vinson were not gambling. "They were walking home," says Cynthia Gantt, the brothers' great-aunt. "They were walking a friend home." The men were shot less than a mile away from their home. Gantt says Robert worked at the McDonald's at the airport. Devon works at a Family Dollar store. NH House backs Senate-passed fetus homicide bill

Image
CONCORD, N.H.— A bill that would expand New Hampshire's homicide law to include causing the death of a fetus is headed to the governor, who has said he has serious concerns about it. Both the House and Senate had voted in favor of charging someone with first-degree murder, second-degree-murder or negligent homicide for causing a pregnant woman to lose her fetus, but they disagreed over when the bill should apply. The House originally wanted to apply the bill to fetal deaths after 24 weeks of pregnancy while the Senate set the threshold at eight weeks. The House on Wednesday agreed to accept the Senate version, sending the bill to Gov. John Lynch. Lynch has said he was open to setting the threshold at viability but has concerns about eight weeks. © Copyright 2012 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Murder case 'without precedent'

30 May 2012 Last updated at 09:39 ET Paul Walsh was released due to "procedural issues" with the murder charge A man has appeared before Lisburn Magistrates Court charged with murdering a man in Belfast in 2001. Paul Patrick Walsh from Laurelbank in Dunmurry is accused of murdering Damian Duffy after a nightclub row. The court heard that he was charged with the murder at the time but it was not proceeded with and was left on the books of Belfast Crown Court. He was released after the PPS withdrew Wednesday's charge and said the case would be brought back to Crown Court. A representative of the Public Prosecution Service told the court the case was "without precedent" and had raised "procedural issues". 'Mob' Mr Walsh was arrested after the police reopened its investigation into Mr Duffy's murder earlier this month. Merced homicide victim, 65, remembered

Image
The latest Merced County homicide victim was a globe-trotting history buff and advertising agency owner who was passionate about boogie boarding, writing screenplays, dancing and spending time with family. That's how those who knew Thomas L. Higgins remembered him Tuesday, three days after the 65-year-old Mercedian was found dead on a rural bridge off Bear Creek Drive and Kibby Road -- about 3.7 miles away from his home. Higgins' loved ones said they're in a state of shock and disbelief, and have no idea who killed him or why. As of Tuesday, no suspects have been arrested and Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin said no motive has been determined. An autopsy conducted Tuesday on Higgins' body revealed he was shot to death. Pazin said the victim's car had been left in the driveway of his Merced home, and there were no signs that anything inside the home had been disturbed or indication of a struggle there. Pazin said Higgins was an "atypical"

2 murder suspects escape from SW Arkansas jail

Image
By JEANNIE NUSS | Associated Press  –  14 hrs ago LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Authorities were searching Tuesday for two murder suspects who escaped from a southwest Arkansas jail after they sawed through metal bars with a hacksaw blade , jumped out of a window and skirted a fence topped with razor wire. Officials realized early Monday that Cortez Hooper and Quincy Stewart , who were both being held on murder and other charges, were missing from their jail cell in Texarkana — about an hour after a guard checked on them at 3:15 a.m., said Chief Deputy Duke Schofield with the Miller County sheriff's department. "Sometime in that hour, they made their escape," Schofield said. Hooper, 23, and Stewart, 35, apparently sawed through metal bars which covered a window measuring about a foot wide and 3.5 feet tall, Schofield said. They broke the glass pane with one of the bars, Schofield said, used a mattress cover to lower themselves about 5 feet do
