Rotorua police have begun a homicide investigation after a man's body was found in Kuirau Park this morning.
The body was discovered at around 1.30am by passers-by and the area has been cordoned off.
Detective Inspector Mark Loper said a large investigation team has been set up but few details could be released at the moment.
"What we can say at this stage is that the man appears to have suffered some serious injuries and we have launched a homicide investigation," he said.
Forensic examination of the area of Kuirau Park where the body was found will be taking place today and Loper is asking the public to avoid the area for the next few days.
"Due to the need to preserve and recover any items that may be linked to this incident, we have an extensive cordon in place around the area.
"Our aim is to reduce that cordon as soon as possible so that people can continue to visit and enjoy these park areas."
More details of the investigation will be revealed at a press conference this afternoon.
