Oklahoma ranks high in U.S. for black homicide victims
The homicide rate among Oklahoma's black population is the fourth highest in the United States, according to a nonprofit organization that studies the effects of firearms in American society.
The study released this week shows nearly 28 out of every 100,000 Oklahoma blacks were homicide victims in 2009, the latest year of data available for such comparisons.
Only Missouri, Michigan and Pennsylvania had higher homicide rates among blacks.
In Missouri, which had the highest rate, 34.72 per 100,000 blacks were homicide victims in 2009.
The national homicide rate among blacks was 17.9 per 100,000 in 2009.
For whites, the rate falls to 2.92 per 100,000, while the overall average in the U.S. that year was 4.76 per 100,000.
Hawaii, Maine, Montana and North Dakota had no black homicide victims that year and ranked the lowest.
