Homicide inquiry launched after body found in park
Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man's body was found in a Rotorua park early today.
The body was found in Kuirau Park about 1.30am by members of the public, Detective Inspector Mark Loper said.
" ... the man appears to have suffered some serious injuries and we have launched a homicide investigation'', he said.
A large team was already working on the probe and would be searching the area and canvassing the local area this morning.
There was a large cordon around almost the entire Kuirau Park area.
"Kuirau Park is a large recreational area located immediately outside the Rotorua CBD. It contains a number of geothermal areas, hot pools, carparks and a children's playground.
"Due to the need to preserve and recover any items that may be linked to this incident, we have an extensive cordon in place around the area. We are asking members of the public to avoid the area certainly today and potentially in the coming days,'' Mr Loper said.
A green Rover hatchback, with what looked to be a smashed
rear window covered by a layer of plastic and dents in the
rear, has also been cordoned off.
The car is parked outside
the playground area of Kuirau Park and near the public
toilets.
