Prosecutors have dropped murder charges against a 17-year-old accused of killing three people outside a South Side bakery late last year, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office announced.
Nicko Grayson was accused of killing three people on Nov. 5, including a young mother who had just returned to her car with a cake for her 2-year-old daughter's birthday outside A Piece of Cake Bakery.
Authorities said that Grayson ran up to Chanda Thompson's vehicle, reached in and kept firing, killing the 21-year-old woman; Cortez Champion; and another passenger, Shawn Russell.
The state's attorney's office didn't give details Friday as to why the charges were dropped in the shooting, in the 400 block of East 87th Street.
"While the charges against Grayson were brought in good faith based on witness accounts and identifications, additional information has developed during the ongoing investigation that warranted dismissal of the murder charges against Grayson at this time," a statement from the state's attorney's office said.
Police shotgun shooting killing Joseph Erin Hamley
On March 7, 2006, Joseph Erin Hamley, an unarmed 21-year-old young man who suffered from cerebral palsy, an intellectual disability, and a psychiatric disability, was fatally shot and killed by Arkansas State Trooper Larry P. Norman of West Fork, Arkansas. At 7AM on a Tuesday morning the disabled Hamley was walking alone on highway 412 just outside the community of Tontitown along the Benton-Washington county line when several Washington County Deputies surrounded him. Four minutes later, before being identified, and while lying on the ground, a shotgun slug fired by Larry Norman, an Arkansas State Trooper breaking police protocol and procedure, killed Joseph Erin Hamley. The fatal shooting was recorded from multiple vantage points on dashboard cameras of the various police cruisers present. The Video recordings from inside Norman's cruiser clearly show he sped to the site, sometimes going over 100 mph, with his AM/FM radio blasting so loud he could not hear his police radio. By the time Norman arrived at the scene, Arkansas State Trooper Short and four Washington County Sheriff's deputies had surrounded Hamley. They had their guns drawn and were taking defensive positions behind their cars. One officer mentioned that if he could get close enough to Hamley, he would use his Taser stun gun. Instead of blocking traffic as he was instructed to do, Arkansas State Trooper Larry Norman did a U-turn and pulled up about 25 yards from the young man and pulled out his shotgun ...Video Rating: 0 / 5
For nearly six years, they were locked up facing a possible death sentence for a grisly 2001 triple homicide in Ypsilanti Township. On Friday, a federal judge dismissed the charges against Deondre Byrd and three other men after a federal prosecutor said new evidence came to light last Friday that prevented the government from taking the case to trial. It was the second time in three years that Byrd escaped murder charges. He has been imprisoned in recent years for both the triple homicide and the slaying of a 16-year-old girl in Ann Arbor, but he has been convicted on only a federal gun charge. "Obviously, I'm pretty upset that almost 11 years later, we still don't have any answers," said Christy Brown, 30, a close family friend of the victims of the triple homicide. She said she got a call from federal prosecutors Thursday saying the case was being dropped, but they wouldn't elaborate. "I was very surprised. I honestly thought they were making some...

FLINT, MI -- There have been 189 murders in the city since 2010. Below is a map of the locations of each murder in the last three years, as well as the names of the slain on Flint's battlefield. The spike in murders occurred almost immediately after large-scale layoffs in March of 2010. By year's end the city had set a record with 66 murders, breaking the previous mark of 61 set in 1986. Killing continued in 2011 with 57 murders. A look at the map shows the majority of the murders took place on the north and east sides, historically the most economically depressed areas of the city. Just 25 murders in the last three years occurred south of Court Street. The map is color-coded by year. Green markers denote 2012 murders while red markers are from 2011 and blue from 2010. 2012 No. 1: Jan. 11: Kevin Berger, 55, died Jan. 11 after a Jan. 10 double shooting at his home on Keller Avenue near Welch Boulevard around 10:15 pm.
