Libonati named Denver Police Civilian Employee of the Year

Debora Libonati. (Denver Police Department)

Homicide unit employee Debora K. Libonati has been named the Denver Police Department's Civilian Employee of the Year.

Selected from her peers from last year's employee of the month honorees, Libonati's name will be engraved on the permanent Employee of the Year plaque in the Police Administration Building's lobby.

Libonati joined the department on May 3, 1982, and has worked with its auto-theft unit, juvenile intake, human resource management, Vice and Drug Control Bureau and the police chief's office before joining the Homicide Unit four years ago.

Her nomination letter lauds her work helping detectives compile accurate, timely reports and voluminous case files.

The award is meant to honor employees "who goes the extra mile," Libonati's nomination states.

"The Denver Police Homicide Unit has an employee who does this every single day."

While Libonati often assists several detectives at once.

"Not once does she ever complain or turn away a detective because of her workload, but instead will simply shut her office door and 'plug away' on this monstrous task," according to her nomination. "It goes without saying that Ms. Libonati's work ethic is second to none."

Libonati also puts up the unit's Christmas tree and hand-stitches ornaments that include each detective's names and badge number.

She also makes holiday gifts for detectives and often brings in desserts she has prepared.

"The detectives assigned to the Homicide and Cold Case units are truly blessed and very fortunate to have Ms. Libonati's constant assistance," according to the nomination. "Her attitude, continuous gestures and kind acts, go above and beyond her job description, but come as second nature to her."
