Homicide probe after body found in Rotorua park

Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of a man was found by members of the public in Kuirau Park, Rotorua, about 1.30am.

Bay of Plenty police district field crime manager Detective Inspector Mark Loper said the man had suffered some serious injuries.

A large cordon was in place around almost all of Kuirau Park, a large recreational area just outside the Rotorua CBD with features including geothermal areas.

"Due to the need to preserve and recover any items that may be linked to this incident, we have an extensive cordon in place around the area," Loper said.

"We are asking members of the public to avoid the area - certainly today and potentially in the coming days. Our aim is to reduce that cordon as soon as possible so that people can continue to visit and enjoy these park areas."

A large team was working on the investigation, and would be searching the park and canvassing the local area this morning.

A team from ESR was on its way to Rotorua and would start a forensic scene examination later this morning.
