Two men held for trial in McKeesport homicide

Image
Two men charged with homicide in the slaying of a man during a drug robbery in McKeesport were held for trial today over the objections of a defense attorney who said one of the men had nothing to do with the heist. Eugene McCarthy Jr., 23, of the Hill District, and Quintelle Anthony Rankin, 21, will head to trial on charges of criminal homicide, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery in the death of 18-year-old Brandon Johns of McKeesport. Mr. Rankin also faces a charge of carrying a firearm without a license and Mr. McCarthy a misdemeanor charge of evidence tampering. Corey Estes, who is related to both men and witnessed the shooting, testified that he met the two men in the Hill District on the afternoon of Aug. 7, where they rode around and smoked marijuana. When they ran out, Mr. McCarthy suggested they drive to McKeesport to find more. They ended up at the Brinton Manor apartment complex, where, according to Mr. Estes, Mr. McCarthy said there were "easy licks up

Ohio homicide victim had burns on 80 pct. of body

Image
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A woman who died after being found covered in burns and suffering on the side of a rural Ohio road was too badly burned for the cause of her death to be immediately determined, although it has been ruled a homicide, a coroner said Friday. Dr. Jan Gorniak , the Franklin County coroner , said the exact cause of 29-year-old Celeste Fronsman 's gruesome death won't be known for sure until the investigation is finished in four to six weeks. A driver found Fronsman early Sunday on a road northeast of Zanesville. She had been raped and burned, and had a strap around her neck. She died two days later at a Columbus hospital. Fronsman had second-, third- and fourth-degree burns on about 80 percent of her body, Gorniak said. No arrests have been made. Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz, who earlier this week called Fronsman's killing "one of the most gruesome things I've ever seen in 23½ years in law enforcement," said Friday that i

The couple left the apartment and got into an argument in the parking lot. Gabrielle Cole, 23, left in her car after the argument, she told police. The two were outside for seven to 10 minutes, they told police. When Roderick Cole went back into the house, his 8-month-old was lying face down in the water in the bathtub. He called 911 and began giving the child CPR, the document states. Paramedics took the child to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he died 2 days later from

Texas surgeon charged in doctor's murder

Image
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — A plastic surgeon was charged with capital murder Thursday after prosecutors said he hired a man to kill another doctor who was dating his ex-girlfriend and paid for the murder using silver bars. Dr. Thomas Michael Dixon of Amarillo, along with the accused gunman, David Neal Shepard, were each indicted on capital murder charges in the July death of Dr. Joseph Sonnier III, who was found fatally shot and stabbed in his home. Both men are each being held in lieu of a $ 10 million bond in the Lubbock County Jail. An arrest warrant affidavit suggests a love triangle involving Dixon, Sonnier and Dixon's ex-girlfriend, who was dating Sonnier. Sonnier's family members have said he had told them that his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend had been causing problems. The woman's name isn't included in court documents. District Attorney Matt Powell said prosecutors haven't decided whether to seek the death penalty. Dixon's two attorneys and She

Doctor's vehicular homicide charge dropped in DWI crash that killed 4-year-old girl

A former Santa Fe doctor who was accused of vehicular homicide following a fatal drunken driving crash on New Year's Eve pleaded no contest to a DWI charge and will spend a year on unsupervised probation. When asked if she wanted to address the court, Deborah Aaron offered no apology and responded, "No, your honor," to state District Judge Michael Vigil. Aaron, 56, had just accepted a plea agreement with the state that dropped a vehicular homicide charge in exchange for a no-contest plea to a misdemeanor DWI offense. Karla Vasquez Rivera, whose 4-year-old daughter, Yuliana Reyes Vasquez, was killed in the crash, wept several feet behind Aaron. Aaron was traveling south on St. Francis Drive in her Land Rover when it crashed into the passenger side of a minivan driven by Vasquez Rivera, who was turning north on St. Francis from Siringo Road. The impact killed Vasquez Rivera's daughter and severely injured the pregnant woman. Aaron told police after the acc

Homicide probe relying on video of burned van

Image
Police are hoping surveillance video obtained from the site of a burned out van helps them identify a suspect in the shooting death of a 22-year-old Ottawa man. Levy Kasende was shot and killed in the early morning of Aug. 25 outside his ex-girlfriend's social housing unit at 2676 Innes Road. He was visiting his four-month-old daughter at the time of the drive-by shooting. Witnesses reported multiple shots rang out at about 12:50 a.m. ET. In the hours following, police found a burned out van in a field in Vars, south of Ottawa. The vehicle's description is similar to one witnesses say sped off after Kasende was shot. There is no surveillance footage from the social housing complex, but police do now have video from businesses near where the burned out vehicle was abandoned. The investigation has been a difficult one for police, so far, as most witnesses are not co-operating. Police have said some of Kasende's friends and neighbours are too scared to talk, whil

Metro Homicide commander suspended without pay

The man in charge of investigating St. Joseph County's most violent crimes is in trouble himself. The prosecutor believes a phone conversation Metro Homicide Commander Tim Corbett had with a South Bend police officer "had a damaging effect on the reputation of the" Metro Homicide unit. Corbett will now serve a five day, unpaid suspension because of what he said in that phone call. He was accused of threatening, harassing and intimidating a fellow police officer, but a special investigator decided Corbett didn't do any of that. Still, the prosecutor decided to suspend Corbett without pay. St. Joseph County Prosecutor Mike Dvorak said what Corbett admitted he said to South Bend Police officer Jack Stilp in a phone conversation April 24 was discourteous, and what happened in that conversation also "had a damaging effect on the reputation of the County Metro Homicide Unit." Millionaire's mails revive interest in Sweden PM homicide cold case

Image
STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The unsolved 1986 homicide of Prime Minister Olof Palme is front page news again in Sweden after newspapers published excerpts of emails written by millionairess Eva Rausing before her death saying she knew who was behind his killing. Palme was gunned down as he walked along the pavement late on February 28 after a visit to the cinema in the center of Stockholm with his wife. A petty criminal was found guilty of the crime in 1989 but was released later that year on appeal. Rausing's emails have revived interest in a case which has long haunted Sweden and become a symbol of police incompetence. Daily Aftonbladet led with the news on its front page on Wednesday with a banner headline of "Rausing's mail about the Palme Killing". It described how Rausing, whose decomposed body was found hidden in her London home in July, said in the emails to a local journalist that the person who instigated the crime was a Swedish businessman. The j

He said there was no obvious cause of death. The body was found near some bushes in a lot bordered by two houses. Neighbor Sheldon Smith said he didn't hear or see anything unusual. France Opens Homicide Inquiry in Arafat’s Death

France: Arafat's Widow Seeks Homicide Inquiry Into His Death (August 1, 2012) Times Topic: Yasir Arafat A French court will open a homicide investigation into the 2004 death of the former Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat, left, French news media reported Tuesday. Mr. Arafat's widow, Suha, petitioned French authorities to investigate last month after findings by a Swiss laboratory suggested that Mr. Arafat may have been exposed to polonium 210, the same radioactive isotope used to poison a dissident Russian former spy in London in 2006. Mr. Arafat died in a French military hospital on Nov. 11, 2004, after an infection that was never identified, according to medical records. There have long been suggestions, however unspecific, that he may have been the victim of foul play. The Palestinian Authority, which has agreed to exhume th

Report: France opens murder probe in Arafat death

Image
PARIS (AP) — French prosecutors opened a murder inquiry into the death of Yasser Arafat on Tuesday, judicial officials told a French new agency, after his widow and a TV investigation raised new questions about whether the Palestinian leader was poisoned. There have long been rumors in the Arab world that Arafat was poisoned, and a Swiss lab's recent finding of elevated levels of a rare and highly lethal radioactive substance on Arafat's clothing has fed those claims. However, the Institute of Radiation Physics said its findings were inconclusive and that only exhuming Arafat's remains could bring possible clarity. Palestinian officials have waffled on the matter — initially approving the exhumation and then saying the matter needed more study — only further fueling suspicions. Still, since Arafat's death, several senior Palestinian officials have alleged that Israel poisoned the Palestinian leader, a charge Israel vehemently denied. Testing Arafat '

Jordan Smith was expecting to learn his fate for the November 2009 attack that killed 19-year-old Nolan Norman. Smith, 23, pleaded guilty last October and has been waiting behind bars for a decision since sentencing submissions were made last January. But following a seven-month delay, provincial court Judge Sid Lerner returned to court Monday and told lawyers he was not prepared to pass sentence until he knows exactly what Smith is admitting to. Specifically, Smith claims he accidentally stabbed Norman in the heart during a scuffle on a Transcona street. But the Crown believes it was much more malicious, especially given a history of bad blo
