Erie police charged a man Friday with homicide in the July 13 shooting death of a man in east Erie.

The suspect, Michael James, 28, of Englewood, N.J., is accused in the death of Teverous G. Williams, 25, who was shot near East 19th and Ash streets at about 2 a.m. on July 13. Williams later died at UPMC Hamot.

James was arraigned Friday night before Erie 1st Ward District Judge Sue Mack on charges of homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, firearms not to be carried, possession of an instrument of crime, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy to commit kidnapping and terroristic threats.

James also is facing a separate charge of recklessly endangering a person in another shooting incident, police said.

He was placed in the Erie County Prison without bond on the homicide charge.

Police, including SWAT team members, apprehended James on Friday evening after a four-hour standoff at the Downtown Erie Hotel, 18 W. 18th St., Erie Police Chief Steve Franklin said.

Franklin said the suspect eventually surrendered.

Police went to the hotel after Erie police detectives received information that the suspect might be there, Franklin said.
