Murder suspect kills self after stealing plane in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (Reuters) - An airline employee broke into a airplane at an airport in the state of Utah on Tuesday, taxied it into a car park and then shot himself dead on board, police and officials said.

Brian Hedglin, a 40-year-old employee of SkyWest Airlines, jumped a security fence at the St. George Municipal Airport early in the morning, using a rug and some gloves, said Marc Mortensen, a spokesman for the city of St. George.

He got inside a SkyWest aircraft, started it up and taxied though an airport fence into a parking lot, damaging some cars. He then shot himself dead, police said.

FBI agents are investigating along with the St. George city police and the Transportation Security Administration, FBI spokeswoman Deborah Bertram said in an email.

SkyWest said the man was on administrative leave from the airline.

"SkyWest Airlines has confirmed that a SkyWest employee was involved in a ground incident with an aircraft at St. George Municipal Airport," it said in a statement. "The aircraft did sustain damage; the extent of the damage is currently being inspected by our maintenance and safety professionals."

Officials said the airport was temporarily closed as a result of the incident. SkyWest said its flights were being diverted from St. George to an airport in Cedar City.

SkyWest operates Delta Connection and United Express flights to Salt Lake City and Los Angeles from the airport, which is the largest in southern Utah. St. George has a population of 73,000.

It was not clear on Tuesday how many flights were affected. The airport, which is owned by the city, opened in 2011.

Homicide victim found at vacant Everett house

EVERETT -- Police on Wednesday were canvassing the View Ridge-Madison neighborhood in Everett after a man was found dead there the night before. A neighbor spotted the man on the ground outside a vacant house at 22 Madison St. He called 911 about 6:20 p.m. The man had obvious signs of trauma to his torso, police said. He looked to be in his late 20s or early 30s. The Everett Major Crimes Unit is investigating the death as a homicide, Lt. Robert Goetz said. Detectives declined to say more about how they believe the man may have died. There are no identified suspects or motives. Manslaughter charges possible in boy's death

Published: Thursday, August 23, 2012, 5:55 p.m. MONROE -- Detectives believe a 7-year-old Monroe boy's parents should face second-degree manslaughter charges in connection with his January overdose death. Monroe police this week wrapped up their probe into the boy's Jan. 30 death and forwarded the case to prosecutors to decide if his parents should face criminal charges. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Lisa Paul likely will begin reviewing the case in the coming days. She doesn't expect to make a charging decision in the near future, however. "It's quite an extensive investigation, and I want to review it thoroughly before I make any decision," she said. The boy, identified as "A.J." in court papers, ingested a lethal amount of salicylates, a chemical common in aspirin and other over-the-counter drugs.
