Officials: Hoquiam homicide victim was state corrections officer

A 20-year-old man who was stabbed to death in Hoquiam on Saturday was a corrections officer who worked at the state prison in Shelton, officials confirmed Sunday.

The victim, Jon Favro, 20, of Aberdeen, had worked in the visiting room of the Washington Corrections Center at Shelton since February. He was a 2011 graduate of Grays Harbor College, according to his Facebook page.

Police say Favro was stabbed to death early Saturday in Hoquiam. A 16-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with his death.

The homicide was discovered after a police officer on routine patrol came across a wrecked, abandoned car and a bloody knife at about 3:10 a.m. Saturday in Hoquiam. The car, a white 2010 Chevy Cobalt, had crashed into a rock embankment near the intersection of 28th Street and Bay Avenue.

The officer discovered that the car's air bags had deployed, but no one was inside. He then spotted a large bloody knife laying on the roadway near the driver's door and blood on the car door.

About 30 yards away, the officer discovered a shoe in the roadway and a knife sheath spattered with blood.

Additional officers from Hoquiam and Aberdeen responded to the area. While they were checking the area for possible victims, a woman contacted police and said she had received a call from her 16-year-old son who told her he was "going to do something terrible."

The woman directed police to her son's location, about a block away from the crash scene.

Officers spoke to the son, who admitted stabbing the driver of the Chevy Cobalt during an altercation at a nearby apartment complex. He said the driver had then sped off in the car.

A few moments later officers discovered a man down on the ground in a yard off of an alley about two blocks away. Life-saving efforts were initiated, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as Jon Favro.

Chad Lewis, spokesman for the state Department of Corrections, said teams are on site Sunday at the Shelton prison to help out staff who knew Favro. The superintendent sent a note to all staff Saturday informing them of his death.

The homicide remains under investigation.

It was not immediately clear whether the suspect had any Corrections Center connection with Favro.
