CORDONED: Police examine the scene near where a woman's body was found in Whangarei.

Police have launched a homicide inquiry after the body of a woman was found in a stream in Whangarei.

Police were called to the discovery of a woman's body in the Waiarohia Stream about 4.20 this morning.

Communications acting Inspector Danny Meade said police had cordoned off two streets near the main shopping centre.

The intersection of Porowini and Tarewa streets, up to Walton St, was closed to traffic and pedestrians from early this morning, and traffic in the town centre was backing up.

Police were urging residents to avoid the area or find alternate ways to access the Tarewa shopping centre from the back entrance.

The road is not only a main thoroughfare but also the access to the Tarewa shopping centre. Traffic is building up around the area and police officers were on point duty at key intersections.

Cordons have been placed around the area while police carry out a scene examination.

The site is just down the road from the Northland Club, where Prime Minister John Key spoke last night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dene Begbie said police were conscious of the impact on traffic flow around the city and would be opening the roads as soon as possible.

"We appreciate the patience of the public while we carry out our inquiries."

Twenty police were working on the inquiry and the identity of the victim was yet to be confirmed.

Police are asking anyone that was in the central city in the early hours of this morning, in particular the Tarewa Road area, to contact the Whangarei police on 09 430 4500.
