Homicide victim saw Canada as safe haven

Evan Gorgees moved to North York from Baghdad two years ago to start a new life in an apartment shared with a brother and sister — for what his cousin said was "safety reasons."

Gorgees hoped to put the violence of Iraq behind him. But ironically, his life came to a tragic end in Canada – the country he considered a safe haven.

On Sunday morning, Gorgees, 29, was fatally stabbed after a fight broke out at Al-Finjan nightclub, a bar in a strip mall in Vaughan on Highway 27 near Highway 7.

The fight was still ongoing when police officers arrived at the scene at 3 a.m.

Paramedics treated Gorgees at the scene, but he died in the parking lot shortly afterwards.

Two other victims involved in the brawl were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

York Regional Police have yet to find a suspect. And now, said cousin Adeel Ishaq, there are plans to fly Gorgees' body back to Iraq, to be buried by his family.

Police are appealing to witnesses who were at the nightclub to call them with any information.

Meanwhile, another man in his 20s was killed the same morning, after being stabbed and abandoned in a ditch next to McCowan Rd., south of Highway 401, in Toronto's northeast.

Toronto police found the body of 22-year-old Nirosan Thillainathan in a grassy area at about 2 a.m. The call to police had initially been listed as an assault in progress.

Police arrested a suspect in that case, Zishan Malik, 20, of Toronto, later on Sunday. Police would not comment on the relationship between Malik and Thillainathan.

Malik faces a charge of second-degree murder after autopsy results released Monday determined that Thillainathan, now designated as Toronto's 31st homicide victim this year, died of stab wounds.
