Police launch 'unlawful manslaughter' investigation after woman's body found

Police have launched an "unlawful manslaughter'' investigation after the body of a woman was discovered in a creek southwest of Brisbane, according to Detective Superintendent Mark Ainsworth. As the search for missing mother-of-three Allison Baden-Clay entered its 11th day, a canoeist reported to police at 11am today the discovery of a woman's body in a creek at Anstead. The body, found underneath the Kholo Creek crossing off Mount Crosby Road, has yet to be formally identified. Murder's a Drag on The Mentalist

Image
He's not in Kansas anymore. The Mentalist 's Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) will suddenly find himself over the rainbow when a ghastly murder has him grilling female impersonators. "The charred corpse of a young man is found handcuffed to the steering wheel of a car, and the main clue at the crime scene is the broken heel of a ruby slipper," says exec producer Daniel Cerone, who also wrote the episode, airing Thursday (10/9c, CBS). "The discovery sends Jane into a nearby cabaret called the Pink Noir, where a male drag show is in full swing." The episode (titled "Ruby Slippers") is peppered with references to L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels - some easily recognizable, others strictly for Oz know-it-alls. "We have fun but we don't play the situation for laughs," says Cerone. "This is a story about a victim of bullying and how that resonates with the drag queens who all grew up feeling different.

NH bill makes causing death of fetus a homicide

Image
CONCORD, N.H.— A Senate committee is recommending making it a homicide in New Hampshire for someone to cause the death of a woman's fetus after conception. The Senate is scheduled to vote Wednesday on the bill that would add crimes committed against the mother that cause her to lose the fetus. The bill would make an exception for medical procedures -- such as abortion -- requested by the mother or her legal guardian. The House-passed bill proposed adding the death to the homicide statutes making it possible to charge someone with first-degree murder, second-degree murder or negligent homicide after 24 weeks of pregnancy. The Senate Judiciary Committee is recommending applying the penalty from conception instead of after 24 weeks. © Copyright 2012 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Justifiable homicide? Mother's quest for answers in son's death reveals roadblocks in homicide cases

Image
Photo by Brandon Dill Priscilla Taylor says she has been disturbed by the impression that Memphis police rushed to judgment in calling the death of her son, James Stokes, a justifiable homicide. Priscilla Taylor is searching for answers. She thinks Memphis police believe her 37-year-old son rode a bicycle down a South Memphis street and fatally shot a man sitting in a car. Taylor's son, James A. Stokes, then allegedly was killed in retaliation by relatives of the man he reportedly shot last Nov. 9 on Greenwood Street near McLemore. Since the day after that double homicide nearly six months ago, Taylor has been disturbed by an impression that police detectives have shown little respect for her son's life, and rushed to judgment by calling his death a justifiable homicide. "If he killed the man, he was dead wrong," Taylor said. "But my son was murdered, too." Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich says she has met with more grieving m

HOMICIDE: LOCAL REACTION FROM THOSE IN THE AREA

Image
Here's a sampling of reaction to a robbery and shooting that took the life of a convenience store worker in Lake City Friday afternoon. Sandy Tice, executive director of Chances for Children, across the street from where the shooting occurred: "A man got up this morning to do an honest day's work and build up his business and someone just took his life. It's cruel. It just makes you think of things that can happen so quickly." Thomas Benson, manager of the Advance Auto Parts and Battery store, in the building next to the convenience store where the shooting occurred, said he didn't know about the robbery until he was told about it by customers. "I heard one shot, one car speed away and one black male run away," he said. "I just thought it was a scuffle between those two individuals and that it had nothing to do with the store itself." Even though the robbery occurred within close proximity of the auto parts store and the shooter had not

Jennifer Hudson moves in a protective bubble at murder trial - Chicago Tribune

Image
Stepping off the elevator in stiletto boots and a black skirt, Jennifer Hudson draws a few sideways glances as she walks with her entourage to a Cook County courtroom where her former brother-in-law is standing trial in the killings of her mother, brother and nephew. Not a single onlooker, however, says a word or tries to approach her. No one even offers a sympathetic smile. Hudson's protective bubble remains unpierced inside the courtroom, where only three members of the public have waited in line that day to watch the proceedings. She takes a seat in the fourth row and bows her head. In a courthouse known for its grittiness and lack of decorum, Hudson is given rare deference. People have largely left her alone during the first week of the high-profile trial, going so far as to stay out of the courtroom on most days and resisting the urge to snap pictures of her with their cellphones. Even two groups of star-struck high school girls who attended Friday's proceedi
