NORFOLK

Carlton Dean Jr., the 19-year-old killed in a murder Saturday morning, was a 2011 graduate of Maury High School and member of the swim team.

He was found shot in the 2700 block of Vincent Ave. in Ballentine Place around 5:45 a.m. Police have not reported any arrests.

"I'm getting calls from everyone. Kids that have graduated years ago that knew him and are very concerned," said Penny Smith, a family friend and the owner of Tri City Aquatic Club in Virginia Beach, where Dean was a swimmer since he was 5 or 6 years old.

Smith called Dean a sweet and sensitive young man.

"He was very, very conscientious with his friends. Very giving. Everybody loved him. I can't think of anybody that didn't like Carlton. He was just that kind of child."

The aquatic club's website posted a photo of Dean when he was around 11 or 12, along with a message of condolence.

Police said Dean was shot. His family lives in the neighborhood. Police are asking that anyone with information call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
