Chicago man pleads guilty to manslaughter
SOUTH BEND -- A 20-year-old Chicago man pleaded guilty today to voluntary manslaughter, admitting his role the 2010 shooting death of Cornelius Miller.
Stephon Rice, one of five people charged in connection with Miller's death, was accused of involvement in the plot to kill Miller -- and allegedly came to South Bend from Chicago to carry out the plans.
According to prosecutors, brothers Stephon and Steven Rice came to South Bend in late November 2010 to kill Miller at the request of Brittney Watson.
Watson was allegedly upset after an argument with Miller.
According to charging affidavits, Miller answered a knock on the door to his Lombardy Street home and was immediately shot in the chest and arm, collapsing in a hallway.
He was found dead by police after a witness called 911.
Stephon Rice, who was 18 at the time of the shooting, was eventually implicated and arrested in Chicago, as was Watson. All three were initially charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Two others, Brandon Rogers and Rene Vasquez, have pleaded guilty to assisting a criminal -- they were drivers of the getaway cars after the shooting -- and remain in jail, awaiting sentencing.
With his plea agreement, Stephon Rice is expected to face a sentence of 20 to 50 years. He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 7.
Steven Rice is scheduled for trial Oct. 15 and Watson has a trial scheduled for Nov. 29.
