Homicide squad investigating ABC worker's disappearance

Homicide squad detectives in Melbourne have been brought in to investigate the disappearance of ABC employee Jill Meagher.

The 29-year-old was last seen at a bar in Brunswick early on Saturday morning and today police found some of her belongings in nearby Hope Street.

Meagher had been drinking with work friends at Bar Etiquette in Sydney Road and was offered a lift home when she left around 1:30am.

She told them she could make the five-minute walk home herself but has not been seen since.

Meagher is described as 165cm tall with long black wavy hair. Police say that when she disappeared she was wearing a black dress, black jacket and black shoes.

Detective Acting Sergeant Steve Bull has told 774 ABC Melbourne that Meagher regularly made the short walk home after socialising in the area.

"She quite regularly attended the bars there and walked home," he said.

Police say they made as many CCTV and credit card checks as they could over the weekend, and will be increasing their checks now that the working week is underway.

"We've canvassed what we could on the weekend; hopefully today once we've had a lot more businesses open we'll be able to make further enquiries," said Det Acting Sgt Bull.

"We were able to check some details but there's obviously a lot more details that we need to check just to confirm everything."

He says that while there are problems in the Sydney Road area from time to time, this disappearance is a very unusual event.

Going through 'hell'

Meagher's husband Tom says he is going through "hell".

"It's devastating. I am just trying to push on... as much as possible," he said.

"Hope is keeping me going; hope that somebody saw something or she will walk through the door."

Friends and family have set up in the hope someone comes forward with information.

"It's Friday night in Sydney Road - it's busy, people have to have seen something. Somebody has to have seen Jill at some stage," Tom Meagher said.

"I just want people to really think if they've seen anything at all to contact the police."

Meagher is from Ireland and has been living in Australia for the past three years.

Her husband denied a newspaper report that suggested his wife may have been unhappy and taken off.

"Everyone said that night she was in good spirits," he said.

"I would think it's unlikely, given her character (to take off). It's just really out of character.

"Nothing was unusual for her to stay out until 2am, but she did specify that she was going to be home before midnight.

"Just that she wasn't answering her phone was kind of worrying."

ABC Local Radio has released a statement saying friends and colleagues of Meagher are saddened and concerned by the news of her disappearance.

"Jill is the unit coordinator of Local Radio Victoria. She is a highly valued and much loved member of the Local Radio team," the statement said.

"Our thoughts are with Jill's family and friends during this very difficult time."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Victoria Police via triple-0 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
