Homicide inquiry launched after body discovery

Counties Manukau Police have launched a homicide inquiry after the body of a man was found on Hillside Road in Mt Wellington.

They were alerted to the death by an anonymous phone caller just before 11.30pm last night.

The 111 call to ambulance was made from a phone box on Panama Road by a man who called himself Hohepa.

A woman's voice was also heard describing where the body was.

Hohepa told police he would wait at the scene for them - but had gone by the time they arrived.

Detective Inspector Dave Lynch is now pleading with him to contact them again.

He says the identity of the body isn't yet know and police are seeking information on him.

He's a Maori or Polynesian, aged in his 20s or 30s and was wearing blue jeans, held up with a piece of white electrical cable and a green sweatshirt.

Police have not yet established the identity of the dead man.
