Homicide, then suicide ruled in Jefferson North stabbing incident

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office on Friday ruled the death of Jeffrey Hunt -- whose body was found on Belle Isle after the fatal stabbing of a co-worker at Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly Plant -- a suicide.

Hunt's slain co-worker, 43-year-old Keith Readus of Detroit, died of multiple stabs and incised wounds, according to the Medical Examiner's Office. His death was ruled a homicide.

Police said an ongoing dispute between the two employees at the plant resulted in one stabbing the other at 7:50 a.m. Thursday and then fleeing. The plant is at Conner and Jefferson.

Hunt, 40, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.

Detroit police did not release any additional details Friday about the case, including the nature of the dispute that led to the stabbing.

Workers returned Friday to Jefferson North with the incident still fresh on their minds.

"It's just kind of eerie going back," a 17-year employee from Detroit said as he walked through the parking lot just before his line started running at 6 a.m.

Along with several other workers who spoke about Thursday's incident, he asked not to be named.

"Just pray for us," he said.

The plant immediately went on lockdown Thursday for about 3,000 employees who produce the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. The assembly lines were stopped, and the employees were sent home.
