Murder suspect Kody Walsh arrested near Memphis

ROCKFORD — Murder suspect Kody Walsh was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after authorities arrested him with a firearm and 40 rounds of ammunition in Tennessee.

A week-long hunt for Walsh ended after he crashed his vehicle while being pursued by authorities near Memphis, Tenn. He attempted to allude local officers after they  tried to conduct a traffic stop.

"When they attempted to stop him they did not know it was him," said Illinois State Police Capt. James Winters.

Illinois authorities will work with Tennessee officials and the Winnebago County State's Attorney to extradite Walsh to Rockford.

On Sunday night, Illinois State Police did not know if Walsh had any connections to the Memphis area or if he was travelling alone. They could not confirm the type of vehicle he was driving, what caused him to crash or if he was injured.

Police obtained a first-degree murder warrant after Walsh, 22, of Rockford allegedly shot Lori A. Daniels, 36, of Wisconsin in the head Sept. 9.

Walsh is believed to have been at Rockford's State Street Station bikini bar on East State Street with a long-time friend, who is a 28-year-old Beloit man. There they met Daniels, who knew the Beloit man.

They left the business together and traveled toward Beloit in the friend's Ford Explorer. After Daniels was shot, Walsh is believed to have forced the man to continue driving to his Beloit home on Vine Street. Once there, Walsh threatened to kill the driver, said Beloit Police Capt. Vince Sciame.

The Beloit man told officers he pleaded with Walsh to not kill him. Walsh fired a single shot, missed his target and then stole the Ford Explorer with Daniels still inside.

South Beloit police officers saw a vehicle matching a description that was distributed in an alert from Beloit.

Rockton officers joined in a pursuit that ended when Walsh crashed the vehicle into a fence in the area of Sp! ringfiel d Road and School Street in Rockford. Officers from multiple jurisdictions worked to set a perimeter and capture Walsh, but he was able to escape, firing at least one shot at officers.

No officers were injured and they did not return fire, fearing for public safety, police said.
