KALAMAZOO, MI -- If the gunshots didn't wake up all the neighbors of the Quick Stop convenience store and gas station on Portage Street, then the police sirens did.

A 24-year-old Kalamazoo man was fatally shot early Sunday morning, and police are continuing to search for the suspect.

Witnesses of the homicide investigation scene say there were at least 10 police cars and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety K-9 unit at the scene for several hours after the shooting. The parking lot was taped off during the on-scene investigation that began about 3:15 a.m. and lasted until about 9 a.m., according to neighbors.

One neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous for his safety, said the gunshots "vibrated his toes" and he went outside to see a black man lying outside the doors of the convenience store. He said soon after, he saw a car speed out of the Quick Stop.

A woman who lives next door to the store, who also wanted to be unnamed for her safety, said she has lived there for five months.

"I know it's not a good part of town, but this shocked me," she said. "It's not abnormal to hear shots around here. But it is abnormal to hear someone get gunned down right next door to where you live."

An employee at the Quick Stop declined to comment on the homicide but said security cameras at the store caught the incident on video.

Police describe the suspect as a black male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, approximately 18 to 20 years old.
