Man charged with involuntary manslaughter in fatal shooting

Prosecutors have filed involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action charges against an Independence man in the shooting death of his longtime girlfriend.

Kari Tabor was shot inside her home at 1917 S. Norton Ave. on Saturday afternoon. She later died of her injuries.

Neighbors said the two were not married, but had been in a relationship for a long time.

Sean W. Ray told police that he had been cleaning his rifle when he got into an argument with Tabor about money issues. He said he pointed the gun toward her while they argued and the gun fired, although he said he did not intend to shoot her and thought the rifle wasn't loaded.

Police said Ray appeared to be intoxicated when they reached the scene. They said that two hours after the shooting, his blood-alcohol concentration measured .222.

The couple had recently learned they would have to leave their home by the end of the week.

Prosecutors asked that Ray be held on a cash bond of $ 75,000.
